What To Avoid During Water Damage Restoration
People do not always know how to deal with water damage especially if they have no previous experience with flooding, sewage back-up or other water problems in the home. While the basic steps to water damage restoration may seem simple enough- get home contents out, take out water, clean house, pack items back in the house- there are actually many more considerations you need to evaluate and many more things you need to do and need to avoid to ensure that you are doing the water damage restoration in the right way. Here are the things you should avoid during water damage restoration.
One of the main things you should avoid doing is using electrical appliances. You need to make sure that your electrical installations are working properly and your appliances are not wet. If your home is still under flood, make sure to turn off the main electric switch to your home. You do not want the flood water to be a conductor for the electricity.
Another important thing you must remember is to not do water damage restoration without having enough protective gear. The two main things you will need are rubber gloves and rubber boots. But if the flood water in your house is pretty high, you will also need splash goggles and a protective mask.
If the flood water also contains sewage back-up, then do not try to clean your home up and get the services of professionals instead. This is so that you don't expose yourself and your family to health hazards. Just like it is during a flood or other natural calamities, your safety and that of your family's should still come first during water damage restoration.
Do not leave clothes in a lump on your floor or any area of your home. Make sure you wash and get them dry right away. If you can not wash them right away, the mud will easily stain on the clothes and molds will develop.
Do not mix ammonia-based cleaning products with bleach. Read all the labels of the cleaning products you are using to avoid mixing chemicals and creating harmful fumes. This does not only apply to bleach but to all the cleaning products you will be using to clean and disinfect your home.
When using heavy equipment that you rented to take the water out, make sure the equipment is outside the home or open all windows and doors to let air circulate. Some people do get sick or die of carbon monoxide poisoning which could happen if you have a machine running on fuel, emitting fumes into your home.
Another thing you shouldn't be doing is putting the contents of your home back inside without making sure everything is dry and you have already checked for hidden moisture. Just a little bit of moisture in hidden areas can result in the growth of mold. Mold can destroy belongings and can also cause health problems because of the spores.
Just remember to prioritize your safety and to follow common sense when doing water damage restoration. You just have to be mindful of the things you are doing in the process.
