Is The World To End in 2012? The Key Arguments

Some prognosticators have begun making noise about a possible cataclysm to befall the earth in the year 2012. In fact there is a specific date that these predictors use. They claim that on December 21, 2012 the world as we know it will end. Is there evidence to back up their claims?

The claim that apocalypse will occur in 2012 is based on the calendar of the Mayans. The Mayans, whose civilization disappeared centuries ago, were renown for the precision of their astronomy and, especially, their calendar. This calender will run out on December 21, 2012 leading some to postulate that a disaster will happen on this day.

But, luckily there is not a good reason to subscribe to this theory. Take a look at the evidence. Because the Mayan calendar comes around every 5200 years then the world should have experienced a disaster 5200 years ago which it did not.

Other 2012 prophets are suggesting that medieval astrologer Nostradamus predicted the end of the world in the year 2012. This is a myth. No where in any of Nostradamus works does he specifically predict anything for the year 2012. He never mentions 2012.

But, you may be wondering, what do the 2012 experts believe will happen in that year. There is no consensus on what exactly will cause the end of the world in 2012. Some believe that there will be a cosmic collision between bodies in outer space that will destroy the earth.

While it is conceivable that a collision in deep space could occur there is not much evidence to support these claims. While some 2012 experts predict that a large body known as Planet X will collide with earth the mainstream community of astronomers assures us that there is no such planetary body on a collision course with earth.

What then is the motivation for these people to predict the end of the world for 2012? The best guess is that the motivation is financial.

The specials which have been shown on cable make money for their networks. And several books have been written detailing the case for destruction in 2012 along with strategies to survive the catastrophe. These publishers are making money every time someone buys a copy of their book.

In conclusion, I would advise that you be aware of what might be motivating the individuals preaching a doomsday 2012 scenario. These individuals are generally profiting from their own prophecy. Remember, there is in fact very little substance to their claims that earth will be destroyed on December 21, 2012.
