For long, I was procrastinating over writing an article to pay my tributes to all those junkies that care nothing to pay exorbitant prices to buy Nike Air Jordans or Dunks but when I read this news bit this morning, I was aghast and lost for words as to what to call this kind of madness. Here is the crazy story of Nike Air Jordan. A Japanese sneakerhaed had paid an outrageous $24,000 for a pair of Air Jordans which the collectors had dubbed “Holy Grail”. Jesus!
Till date, I have only heard of these mad people giving a damn to a few hundred dollars to buy Air Jordans but this is really unconscionable by any means considering the fact that the amount is more than good enough to buy a brand new Honda Accord. I had seen sneaker junkies scouring the web and pestering the far off sellers offering to buy at top dollars, I have also seen hoards of them getting up early in the wee hours to travel long distances only to stand in line to buy their shoes first on the first day, but not anything of this kind. May be I need to do a little catch up.
I am not saying that this craze is characteristic of Nike shoe brands alone; sneaker zombies are just mad after one thing – they want the rarest and coolest shoe the world is offering, it could be Adidas or Reebok, but it is Air Jordans now.
Trying To Fathom the Craze
I often recall how sneakerheads spend days after days discussing and thinking about shoes alone. There are a hell lot of websites and discussion boards dedicated for the purpose making me think if craze is what drives Nike Air Jordan, it is the other way round for the mad people in turn. Fans and enthusiasts are aware that shoe makers keep trying out various colorways, styles and materials only to whet their craze. In our case, Nike, is playing the ball held very close to its chest which you can see with each release being very limited in number per model and ensuring that stores get no more than 20-30 pairs. Nike is addressing the obsession by making the sneakers as illustrious as possible, sinking in huge sums of money on research and designing only to make sure that buyers go bananas when they see it.
Agreed, wearing your favorite Nike Air Jordans or Air Jordan x Air Force 1 Fusion, which is another hot cake from Nike stable, to parties or campus does to you what all the rest of your dresses may not have done. Be that as it may, you can hardly think of venturing out without stepping into your favorite shoe, particularly to a campus party. The clearly identifiable point is Air Jordans are available in a myriad of models and color schemes that choosing a pair of shoes is a big task unlike sometime ago when it was precisely the opposite.
