No Smoking Britain - One Year On

The No Smoking ban came in to force in England on 1st July 2007. A year later, we take a look at what the effects of it been and how has it effected businesses in their day to day routines?

The smoking ban was implemented in England on the 1st July 2007. The ban meant smoking in enclosed public places and places of work was now prohibited. It is now a year on and the Country seems to be used to a smoke free environment. So much so that it is increasingly difficult for non-smokers to remember a time when their evenings consisted of sitting in bars or pubs with a cloud of smoke lining the ceilings. But what has the actual impact been - have businesses such as pubs and clubs seen a downturn in takings because of the smoking ban?

It has become commonplace for pug-goers to stand outside their local and we are now used to seeing this regularly. Many smokers have not disrupted their weekly routine, including evenings spent in the pub just because they cant smoke. They have just made the necessary sacrifices in order to accommodate the ban.

Landlords have done their fair share to ensure that their customers are not put off continuing to come to their establishments though. This includes creating outdoor patio and seating areas where food isnt served to allow smokers to enjoy a drink and a cigarette. This does of course cause some problems for landlords with non-smoking punters complaining about the smoke near dedicated smoking areas! However, it has meant that the number of customers visiting their local public house has not decreased and business has remained stable.

Landlords and establishment owners have been required to use signage to indicate where smoking is permissible. Many No Smoking signs have been purchased in the last year, in many different formats and in many different styles. This seems to have had an effect of discouraging smokers from lighting up inside without too much of a reminder from staff directly. A well positioned sign warning patrons that they are in a no smoking area seems to be suffice to discourage the rogue customer.

The effect of no smoke being present in bars and clubs is certainly noticeable to non-smokers too. Many have commented on the improved environment for non-smokers. This is with regard to the lack of smoke and the smell that accompanies stale smoke. Despite the ban being in place for over a year now, there is still something refreshing about waking up the morning following a night in a bar and not having that stale smoke smell on your skin and hair.
